Six Ways to Make Money with Your Web Site

The Internet has developed a great deal from its early academic origins. Today, the Internet is an incredibly commercial medium, offering lots of ways to make money. And because the Internet  is still developing, your best strategy is to create as many income streams as possible. Even if some run dry, you can maximise the others to ensure your website makes money.

  1. Sell advertising and sponsorships on your site. This is the original Internet  business model, selling ad views to advertisers who want to reach the visitors that your site attracts. Overuse of Banner ads has created what some people call "banner blindness", where surfers just don't see banner ads any more and have become conditioned to ignore them. This has meant that as response rates drop, so do the rates that can be charged for ads, but this is still the most common way businesses try to make money from their Web sites.
  2. Sell products and services from your site. Commerce is top on the Internet nowadays, as everyone rushes to enable e-commerce on their Web sites. Despite the competition, online sellers can make impressive sales. Be aware, though: doing it well is harder than it looks. And of course, you'll need your own product and fulfilment center to do this, which can be expensive.
  3. Point people to other sites. The Affiliate Programs offered by online retailers may be simplest and easiest way to make money with your site. Simply point visitors to your site to a related product or service for example, and you collect a commission on anything the user buys.
  4. Collect and sell information. Creating a user database isnīt just a good idea - itīs good business. Demographic info about your visitors is a potential gold mine, and specific information about a userīs preferences and interests is even more valuable. But donīt sacrifice your credibility with customers for a fast dollar - always respect their privacy, and never sell their personal info without their permission.
  5. Charge a fee to access a section of your site - Even though the Internet  offers a vast array of free content, if your content is unique and valuable, you can make money charging for it online. If youīre not comfortable charging for all of your content, offer a premium area, or sell certain bits piece by piece. Some forums, for example, offer free online access to their main sections but charge to participate in a members lounge where more lucrative information is often available.
  6. Do email marketing - Remember, thereīs more to the Internet than just browsing the World Wide Web. In some ways, email can be even more lucrative than the Internet . You can sell ads on your email newsletters, and use targeted emails to alert customers about special deals or new products. Just don't spam - be sure that your customer wants your email before you send it.
